Liam: iFacility CCTV and Alarm Installation Engineer
Liam has been an engineer with iFacility since 2014, and very involved in a huge range of security installations with the company in that time. IP CCTV installations and security system updates at Greggs plc, the successful national bakery chain, take up about half of his time. The other half is hugely varied; Liam has helped to establish security solutions and CCTV monitoring systems throughout the country for clients such as Hertz, Greggs and Bradfords, and internationally at Bayern Munich FC and Qatar Aspire Zone.
Liam says that a typical day is difficult to describe, “It depends on the job and the location. On a new job, we always start with a check of the site, run through the customers requirements and expectations, establish the layout, read through the health and safety procedures and risk assessments before we do anything else. We then start to install cabling to link the system with the cameras, alarm, access control components (depending on the job), usually with one engineer on the cameras or other end devices, and one on the server and switches to make sure everything is done properly.”
“Once all of the hardware is in place, we get on to checking the software. This involves linking in to our head office, where one of the Somerset office commissioning team checks the views from all of the cameras and that they can remotely access all the alarms and door panels; they cross check with the original System Design Proposal to fully make sure that the important areas in the customer’s business are fully covered by the cameras’ ranges and sensors and they tell us exactly where any adjustments are needed, so we can fine tune everything to give the best performance for the client.”
“The installation and SDP then gets checked over by Nathan Marchant, Installations Manager, who gives final approval when he is happy that every part of the system is working properly. Then we run through how everything works with the customer, making sure that they are completely happy before we leave the site.”
His favourite part of the job? “It is great to be able to work in such different places; to go from a bakery in Tamworth to a football stadium in Qatar is amazing, and new technology like the 4K CCTV cameras, biometrics and thermal imaging keep everything really interesting.”
